Ó Fiaich Library & Archive, Armagh

This project presents a carefully considered conservation-led proposal for the refurbishment, retrofit, and sensitive extension of the existing Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich Library & Archive, located within the historic ecclesiastical setting adjacent to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Armagh.

The scheme is underpinned by a comprehensive feasibility study that identifies a series of strategic interventions to address the functional, environmental, and spatial limitations of the current facilities. These deficiencies pose a direct risk to the long-term preservation of invaluable heritage assets, including unique volumes, archival documents, artefacts, and specialist materials, currently constrained by inadequate storage capacity and substandard environmental conditions.

The design approach prioritises the retention and enhancement of the existing building fabric, applying conservation best practice to improve thermal performance, environmental control, and accessibility, while ensuring the architectural character and cultural significance of the site are preserved and reinforced. The proposed extension is conceived as a complementary and deferential addition, responding to the historic context, scale, and materiality of its surroundings, and establishing a clear yet respectful dialogue with the adjacent Cathedral setting.

The proposal has been developed for presentation to the Archbishop of Armagh, trustees, elected representatives, and relevant governmental bodies, forming part of a wider strategy to safeguard a heritage collection of national and international significance, ensuring its protection, accessibility, and continued stewardship for future generations
